First off YES!!
People all over are familiar with Pilates - it's one of the fastest-growing fitness programs in the world, and millions have experienced the physical fitness benefits of added strength, length, decompression, and agility that it provides. This has lead to the development of Pilates Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention (Prehabilitation).
Many injuries are caused by imbalances in the body. These imbalances can be caused by anything, from our posture, the way we walk, sit, stand, work, and in the case of athletes, during the intense demand we put on our bodies to perform in our sport.
Pilates promotes an even musculature throughout the body by strengthening the core and hips. This is considered the powerhouse of the body and consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine, as well as the glutes, hips, and pelvis. Pilates also focuses on spinal and pelvic alignment, which is critical in getting us to move efficiently to avoid injury. Core and pelvic stability isn't all Pilates does however! It will create the same stability, strength, flexibility in all parts of the body, including the shoulder girdle, rotator cuff, knees, and hips! This is why it's so effective as a rehabilitation program.
If you have injured yourself and are considering Pilates, it's important to make sure that your instructor has Physical therapy or Sports therapy experience. There's a big difference between teaching Pilates as a form of exercise and using it as a form of therapy!!!
Today Pilates is being used by athletes involved in many different sports to help them enhance athletic performance, improve technique, and prevent injuries. Every athlete can benefit from pilates. Some names you may recognize
